Homecoming Amazon Review - Vulture

Confusion is central to the twisting plot of “Homecoming” when the psychological thriller returnsto Amazon Prime on Friday, but at least two things are clear through all the gaslighting: Season 1 is much better in hindsight, and Season 2has problems standing on its own.Esmail, though, was already mashing up techniques he loved from Alfred Hitchcock, Brian De Palma, and Alan J.Monáe, whose character wakes up in a rowboat with no idea how she got there, is all action by contrast, and is given little time to let moments breathe.

Please reference “Error Code 2121” when contacting customer service. It's a pleasure to see Roberts stretch her legs on TV, particularly in her scenes opposite James, where her heart is most evident. Not only does it feature a higher calibre of star, but it’s also directed by Mr Robot’s Sam Esmail, a singular talent capable of infusing even the most mundane scene with a sense of low-level dread.

Alvarez has some of the same arsenal of split-screens, bird's-eye overhead shots and audacious zooms and shifts of focus, but film geeks will probably miss the attention-grabbing fun with aspect ratios and the soundtrack of classic film score references, replaced by a workmanlike thriller composition by Emile Mosseri. When Walter himself finally turns up, James remains appealingly vulnerable, but he also feels too marginal without the friendship that was so crucial to the first season. To say more would, perhaps, give away twists and turns, but those plot movements are of more purely academic interest than emotional involvement.

Amazon’s big hope for autumn sees Roberts play a psychologist caught up in a complicated government programme. And Julia Roberts is excellent. She has no idea how she got there.

‘Homecoming’ Season 2 Review: Janelle Monae Series Loses ...

This is a solid, suspenseful, old-fashioned thriller that flicks backwards and forwards in time.Rather than toggling back and forth between two timelines, the season spends several consecutive episodes in one, then flashes back for several more to slowly explain how Jackie wound up in the rowboat, then snaps back to its own present. But c’mon, what’s really being pumped out of its essential oils infuser?.

Suffice it to say that there are multiple hairpin turns in her story, yet through it all the character doesn’t grow much.Cast: Janelle Monáe, Hong Chau, Stephan James, Chris Cooper, Joan CusackCreators: Eli Horowitz and Micah BloombergDirector: Kyle Patrick AlvarezPremieres: Friday (Amazon). She usurped the job from the obnoxious Colin Belfast (Bobby Cannavale) after he was implicated in the rehab scandal.

A military picture featuring fellow soldiers with their faces X-ed out suggests she may be a target of some sort. But c’mon, what’s really being pumped out of its essential oils infuser?.Mostly, though, it’s interested in explaining that Audrey-Colin scene, and in exploring the larger dynamics of a company that would make such a monstrous drug.

Monáe, like Roberts, plays a person whose eroded memory conceals an involvement at the goings-on of the cryptic Geist corporation.Instead, it makes the first season look expansive by comparison. This season is almost bizarrely no-frills.

Here she was, late to the party, making her television debut half a decade after every other big-name star in Hollywood. When the title card for the finale appears and you see that it’s called “Again,” that will seem about right.

So, what a pleasant surprise it is to watch Homecoming and realise that, hey, it works.Specifically, it’s as old as Alfred Hitchcock.

In her expanded role, Chau continues a tremendous recent TV run that has included HBO's Watchmen and a standout episode of Forever on Amazon.Fundamentally, for all that new details about the intrigue at Geist get larded on, there’s not that much in the way of true story here — the first season, for all that it embroidered strangeness on its margins, was elemental.Esmail, though, was already mashing up techniques he loved from Alfred Hitchcock, Brian De Palma, and Alan J.
